Audit says prison inmates had access to sensitive information, like social security numbers

A state audit has found that Maryland prison inmates had access to personal information such as social security numbers while working for Maryland Correctional Enterprises.
The audit released Tuesday by the Maryland Department of Legislative Services focused on a program that provides work experience for inmates.
They entered claims from physicians under the state’s Medicaid program into the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Medicaid Management Information System.
The department used a computer program to redact social security numbers before providing them to the inmates for data entry. However, the program did not redact all of the numbers.
In a response, Maryland Correctional Enterprises notified the department last year that it cannot process the claims any more.
The audit period ranged from January 2009 to July 31, 2011.
