It's a new year, but familiar pressures are continuing to squeeze agencies to ramp up efficiency, often by cutting staff or space.
The latest evidence comes from the Agriculture Department, which will close or consolidate about 260 field offices and labs as part of streamlining intended to save about $150 million annually.
"This is a tough time, there's no question about it," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in announcing the "Blueprint for Stronger Service." But USDA has to find a way to do its job, he said, "notwithstanding the fact that we're dealing with less money and fewer workers and more work."
