Coburn Credits the American People, Leader McConnell and Senate Appropriators for Defeating Omnibus

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) released the following statement today regarding the defeat of the proposed year-end $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill.

“The defeat of the omnibus should reassure every American that their voice is making a difference in Washington. Spending bills typically get bigger over time and almost never disappear altogether. This bill never would have been defeated if not for the outcry from taxpayers across America,” Dr. Coburn said.

“I would also applaud Republican members of the appropriations committee who made a hard choice to defeat a bill they genuinely believed was best for the country and their constituents. They recognized that we can’t fund every project that might have merit. The greatest national security threat facing our nation is our national debt. Our charge is to set priorities. The Senate’s decision to embrace a different set of priorities should give the American people confidence that this body is moving closer to making the truly hard decisions that will put our nation on a sustainable course,” Dr. Coburn said.
