Mower, Mitchell counties shirk State Line Road project

Mower County [Minnesota] Board members last week opted to withdraw a request for federal funding to improve a township road leading to a new ethanol plant.

On Tuesday, the board voted unanimously to cancel its request for a federal earmark because the Mitchell County (Iowa) Board also opted not to provide matching funds for a federal grant.

In early March, the Mower board agreed to help apply for the federal grant but had no interest in providing money for part of a local match.

Projected to cost a little more than $1 million, the project would've improved two miles of the Iowa-Minnesota border road going west of the new Absolute Energy plant near Lyle.

Absolute had agreed to pay one-third of a 20 percent local match for a federal grant, County Coordinator Craig Oscarson said.

Lyle Township, in Mower's southwest corner, is responsible for that gravel stretch of State Line Road.

Board member David Hillier said that if Mower leaders had additional funds, they would place that money into the county's own road budget.

Absolute Energy, which had its first corn grind in February, expects to produce 100 million gallons of ethanol a year.
