Ocean Isle Beach receives best restored beach award

Town named best restored beach

OCEAN ISLE BEACH

Ocean Isle Beach [North Carolina] has won a 2008 Best Restored Beach Award from the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association.

The town won the award for its federal beach restoration program that began in 2001, when coastal engineers dredged Shallotte Inlet, on the east end of the island, and placed sand on the beach.

According to a news release, the nourishment has restored wildlife habitat, provided storm protection and increased recreation space.

Town Administrator Daisy Ivey said the federally funded project was successful. Erosion problems persist, however, near the inlets.

The town funded a project last year to deposit sand on the east end of the island, but much of it has washed away. Property owners near Shallotte Inlet now are placing sandbags near their residences to temporarily prevent erosion.
