Art center project picks up $400K

The Burchfield-Penney Art Center will receive a $400,000 federal earmark toward completing its new facility on the grounds of [New York’s] Buffalo State College.

The funds, expected to be announced on April 4, come through Rep. Louise Slaughter,D-Fairport, and the congressional FY 2008 Omnibus appropriations bill, part of $809 million earmarked for 298 projects across the country.

The 65,000-square-foot, $30 million Burchfield-Penney building will double available space for the gallery, currently housed in Rockwell Hall. The new building, targeted for opening in June, also will house a 250-seat lecture hall, a laboratory for the art conservation program, office space for visiting scholars and instructional space for a children's art education program.

The federal funding was the final piece needed to complete construction of the site. Other major funds included a $700,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation and $16.4 million from the state.
