Funding Secured for N-F Train Station

BUFFALO (2008-04-09) Senator Charles Schumer and Representative Louise Slaughter say Washington is ending nearly 20-years of delays and is clearing the way for a new passenger train station in Niagara Falls.

Millions of federal dollars have been set aside over the years for the conversion on the historic Customs House near the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge into a new Amtrak Station. It would replace the current station near Hyde Park.

Design work on the project will finally begin now that $7-million in federal funding for the project has been released.

Mayor Paul Dyster says he's excited the project may finally go forward, potentially bringing more tourists to the city.

"It's very close, not just to the falls and the casino, but also to the gorge discovery center, to the Aquarium of Niagara...Whirlpool State Park...the Power Vista...Fort Niagara and so on," Dyster said.

Dyster was in Albany Tuesday meeting with state officials and asking them to help get the station project moving.

Renovation work on the 144 year old Customs House is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2009.
