U-M: US grant allow $320,000 restoration of Pompeii pictures

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP)- A federal grant means a 20th century Italian artist's watercolor recreations of wall paintings from ancient Pompeii will get a $320,000 restoration at the University of Michigan's Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.

The university announced yesterday it's received a $160,000 matching grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to restore 22 large-scale watercolors Maria Barosso painted in 1925 to 1927. Michigan must cover the remaining $160,000.

The original frescos at Pompeii's Villa of the Mysteries show the cult of Dionysus, Greek god of wine and pleasure. Mount Vesuvius erupted in the year 79, burying the city in ash.

Curator Suzanne Davis says the watercolors are highlights of the museum's collection of 100,000 objects.
