According to a [Kentucky] state audit, a group working to preserve a Civil War battlefield in Pulaski County was reimbursed twice for the same project.

The Mill Springs Battlefield Association received more than $400,000 in federal money for a visitor center and museum.

The association was reimbursed more than $213,000 twice, first with federal housing money and then again with federal transportation money.

The county served as the passthrough agency for the federal aid. The audit found the fiscal court didn't properly oversee the grant money.

State Auditor Crit Luallen's office has referred the double reimbursement to the FBI for possible investigation.

Battlefield association administrator Norrie Wake said all the federal money went to the visitor center and museum and he believes it was all spent properly.
