Creek County Republicans held their convention Saturday at the Central Technology Center in Sapulpa and organizers of the convention were pleased that the number of attendees exceeded their expectations.

“The attendance indicates that the citizens of Creek County are taking a more active roll in the decisions affecting their community,” said Chairman Debra Henley.

The event started off with a prayer breakfast with special guest speaker Sen. Tom Coburn.

Coburn spoke of the biblical story of Ester the Jewish queen and how she turned to prayer and fasting when faced with a difficult decision.

“Our country has yet to come together to pray for the situations of Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel as well as our own country in the fight against terrorism,” Coburn said.

“Our country will not be successful until we recognize that our faith in God has been the source of our success.”

Coburn also spoke about the control of the border and that $7 billion has been allotted for agents, judiciary appointments to the border court and technological resources.

When asked about the presidential race for 2008, Coburn said that the election is still 21 months away and really too early to know who will be a front-runner. Coburn is also a supporter of the fair tax bill and said that $350 billion was spent just this last year to figure out how to pay taxes.
